Always store your catalog databases locally or in an encrypted container (Veracrypt). Most advanced catalog tools support database password protection—use it. Before you store the drive away, run a verification pass. Save the checksum data inside the catalog file. You know a great shot of a sunset
Open your software (say, NeoFinder). Drag the drive or folder into the "New Catalog" window. Choose your parsing depth: "Full metadata" for documents and media; "Quick scan" for raw archives.
