The movie takes place in the White House, where a violent terrorist attack occurs during a state dinner. The President of the United States, Benjamin Asher (played by Aaron Eckhart), is taken hostage by a group of heavily armed mercenaries, led by the ruthless and cunning Stroz (played by Robert Hobbs). As the situation spirals out of control, the Secretary of Defense, Ruth McMillan (played by Morgan Freeman), turns to the only person she trusts to rescue the President: Mike Banning (played by Gerard Butler), the former head of the Presidential protection detail.
