But the cafe remains the origin story.
"She was genius at logical reasoning. I was a mess," Hamza says. "Every Saturday, she would explain the questions to me. Her voice was so soft that we had to sit closer and closer to hear over the cappuccino machine."
For the lucky ones, the storyline progresses. The cafe becomes the meeting point for the walima (wedding reception) planning. The coffee dates turn into grocery runs. The romantic lighting of the cafe is replaced by the fluorescent lights of a shared apartment or a joint family home.
"I met my boyfriend because he corrected my coffee order on Instagram," says Alishba, 22. "He said the coffee at the place I went to was burnt. I challenged him to prove it. He took me to a hidden spot in Commercial Market. We argued about roast profiles for an hour. Now we argue about everything, but we still drink coffee together." It would be naive to romanticize this trend entirely. Rawalpindi is not Brooklyn. The cafe romance exists in a perpetual state of high alert.
One of the most famous romance storylines in local lore involves a cafe called Gloria Jeans near the Giga Mall. For three months, a group of university students studied for the LSAT. In reality, two of them, Hamza and Maha, were falling in love.
