In one of the most horrific attack sequences ever filmed (for which DiCaprio insisted on practical effects), the bear mauls Glass, leaving him with a collapsed throat, a broken leg, and deep lacerations across his back.

However, the raw narrative of The Revenant is so primal that it transcends pixel count. The story of a father who survives the impossible for revenge—and finally realizes that "revenge is in the Creator’s hands"—hits just as hard in as it does in IMAX.

The film opens with the "Captain Andrew Henry" trapping team being ambushed by Arikara warriors. As they escape via boat, Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) advises the captain to leave the vessel and travel over land. While scouting alone for game, Glass stumbles into a mother grizzly bear protecting her cubs.

Fitzgerald, obsessed with getting his share of the fur fortune, tries to smother Glass. When Hawk intervenes, Fitzgerald stabs and kills the boy. Fitzgerald then tricks Bridger into believing Glass is dead, and they flee, leaving Glass for dead in a shallow grave.

Fun fact: DiCaprio ate raw bison liver, slept in animal carcasses, and refused to wear synthetic warmth to preserve the authenticity of the frost. Even in standard definition, his pain is visceral.
